Blanton Museum of Art
Austin experiences art at the
new Blanton!
The Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin is one of the foremost university art museums in the country with the largest and most comprehensive collection of art in Central Texas. The museum welcomes and engages all visitors by offering personal, extraordinary experiences that connect art and ideas, reaching within and beyond the University of Texas campus to stimulate the thriving, creative community that is Austin, and beyond. The Blanton's permanent collection of more than 17,000 works is recognized for its European paintings, Modern and Contemporary American and Latin American art, and an encyclopedic collection of prints and drawings.
November 2008 is the grand opening of the Blanton's Edgar A. Smith Building! The second building of the Blanton Museum of Art complex is a 56,000 square-foot structure that will house a brand new café, expanded Museum Shop, a 299-seat auditorium, classrooms, and administrative offices. Several celebratory events are planned. Visit www.blantonmuseum.org for more information.
Current exhibitions include Reimagining Space: The Park Place Gallery Group in 1960s New York (September 28, 2008 thru January 18, 2009) and The New York Graphic Workshop: 1964-1970 (September 28,2008 thru January 18, 2009). Reimagining Space explores work from the The Park Place Gallery, a prominent artist's cooperative space shared by five sculptors and five painters with unique interest in dynamic, complex space, and engagement with contemporary cultural issues. The New York Graphic Workshop is the first comprehensive presentation of a crucial, yet little-known, episode in the history of American and Latin American Conceptual art. The Blanton also offers WorkSpace, a series featuring commissioned projects by contemporary artists from around the world. Featured WorkSpace artists may be found at http://blantonmuseum.org/works_of_art/exhibitions/workspace/index.cfm.
Highlights of the Blanton's public programs include B scene, a theme-inspired art party featuring live music, free food, and cash bar held the first Friday of every month from 6-11 p.m. For those seeking escape from everyday pressures, the Blanton presents Third Thursday, a free monthly event featuring art activities, yoga in the galleries, book club meetings, and Art Brief Tours. On the third Thursday of each month, the Blanton extends it hours and remains open to the public until 9PM.
Future Exhibitions:
Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design, and Culture At Midcentury (February 22 thru May 17, 2009) takes a look at the broad cultural zeitgeist of 'cool' that influenced the visual, graphic, and decorative arts, furniture, architecture, music, and film produced in California in the 1950s and early 1960s.
Francisco Matto: The Modern and the Mythic (June 21 thru September 20, 2009) is the first comprehensive exhibition in the United States of this Latin American pioneer of modernist abstraction.
